At Last! Beck is released with English subtitles!
Beck is a wonderful detective series with lots of plot twists, personalities (some not quite "normal" like Beck's often enraged and sometimes violent partner, the handsome Grunvald), and plenty of thrills and thought-provoking storylines.
There are 26 Becks, I believe, in the original Swedish and those of us who are big fans are thrilled that we can now start buying them here in the U.S. with English subtitles.
Prior to these new releases (Series 1-3 and Series 4-6), we've had to scrounge all over Europe and Australia to find some and only came up with 17-26.
To all mystery and detective lovers, we may have to buy it, but it's still a gift.
In the begining.....
Before there was the girl with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Joe Nesbo, Henning Mankell and all of the other excellent authors in the Scandinavian mystery invasion, there was the Martin Beck mystery series witten by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo published between 1965 and 1975. They are the Dashiel Hammett and Raymond Chandler of the Scandinavian school and their books stand up quite well against the best of Hammett and Chandler. This more modern television series captures the spirit of the books. While these are very tough minded mysteries, they offer more by way of humanistic values than we are used to seeing these days. Martin Beck, a middle aged policeman, is a bit neurotic - but his heart is good. The supporting character of the swaggering Gunvald Larsson, played by Mikael Persbrand, is one of the best characters in detective literature and television. Everything about this series is first rate and it is not to be missed by the lovers of Scandinavian noir or noir in general.
Check Out The Unusual Suspects
I purchased "Beck: Episodes 1-3" from Amazon where I buy ALL my DVDs.
I watch very little American TV. But, I thoroughly enjoy well-done crime dramas from other countries. I have television series in boxed sets from the U.K., Scandinavia, Australia, Italy, France, and other countries. "Beck" is outstanding. Good, solid police procedural with characters who are 'real', involved in solving crimes, yet with a touch of humor thrown in to lessen the tension. Try "Beck"---you'll never go back to American crime drama again! Well, except election coverage---you can't escape from that!
